ESPON is a collaboration program and network focusing on spatial planning and territorial development in Europe. ESPON provides knowledge and learning for the formation of policy, strategies, and plans at all levels and to all actors involved in the development of regions, cities, and territories.

The program has built up an extensive portfolio of knowledge, tools, and activities, which can be found at https://www.espon.eu/. Here, interested parties can e.g. sign up for a newsletter. IMPORTANT: All questions regarding potential applications and the application process should be directed in English to the ESPON secretariat at application@espon.eu. The ESPON secretariat helps with this and guides everyone with interest in getting funding from the program. Our role at Aalborg University, as Danish point of contact, is to convey knowledge from current and finished projects to relevant Danish stakeholders. See more below.

ESPON DENMARK

The Danish position in ESPON is taken care of by the Danish Agency for Planning and Rural Development, which has appointed Aalborg University via the contact person below as the Danish contact point (European Contact Point – ECP) in the ESPON program. ESPON DANMARK holds the following roles:

To disseminate knowledge, tools, and activities produced by ESPON to actors with an interest in national, regional, and local development and planning. This applies both to politicians, practitioners, other stakeholders, researchers, and citizens.
To collaborate with the ESPON network across countries and promote transnational collaborations with and between regional and local actors.
To act as a national platform and open forum for everyone with an interest in ESPON and regional and local development. That's why we call it the ESPON Denmark network.

As part of the ESPON program, Aalborg University and the Housing and Planning Agency regularly organize events in Denmark, both physical and virtual, which partly inform about the program and partly summarize projects and knowledge from previous and current projects with relevance for Danish context. Some ESPON projects have Danish examples and studies, while others have interesting results from other countries with relevance for development and planning in Denmark.
