Life Cycle Sustainability (LCS)
ABOUT US
The Life Cycle Sustainability (LCS) research group brings together multiple competences within industrial ecology and sustainability science for the holistic and quantitative assessment of human systems in a life cycle perspective.
The research in LCS targets the development of scientific approaches, methods, tools, and databases to advance industrial ecology, primarily in the fields of life cycle assessment and input-output analysis, and encompassing multiple dimensions of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic. These developments are applied across a variety of cases, topics and scales: from existing products and services to emerging technologies and up to entire sectors and the global economy.
The backbone of LCS is systems thinking and life cycle thinking, interdisciplinarity, and sound science to support decisions towards sustainability
Teaching
Postgraduate Level
- At postgraduate level, LCS organizes every year the PhD course Advanced LCA – Consequential and IO-based life cycle assessment teaching advanced methods for LCA.
- LCS is also involved in the PhD course Summer School in Applied Circular Economy running a module in applied LCA theory and practice.
- Furthermore, LCS runs the continued education (EVU) course Life Cycle Assessment with focus on carbon footprint that targets professionals in industry, consultancy, and public administration.
Master Level
At Master level, LCS teaches in:
- The Master’s Programme in Urban, Energy and Environmental Planning with specialisation in Environmental Management and Sustainability Science.
- LCS coordinates the course in Sustainable Products and Services combining LCA and ecodesign, and supervises group projects in several semesters.
- LCS is also involved in the Sustainable Cities Master programme, in the courses: Transitioning from Wasteful to Sustainable Cities and Water Management and Climate Change Adaptation giving lectures on the theory and application of LCA in the context of urban and water management, as well as with supervision of project groups
